Hyllie is a town-planning proposal we have developed in close cooperation with KOD Architects. In the southern parts of Malmö, there are plans to build 4000-5000 new dwellings in a relatively small area between the large-scale structures around Hyllie station in the north and the outer Ring road in the south. Key concepts in the program request were “small scale”, “local city” and “sustainable development”. Modern urban development has often solely focused upon complying with and fitting to existing buildings, leaving green areas as simple barren gaps between structures, void of their own independent content. Our proposal wants to break this complacent trend by doing the exact opposite - letting the public space stamp character and set the tone for the area. This is done by creating a park and garden with a green structure that links together the different parts of the town, acting as a hub and meeting place for social activities and livelihood. The green structures start in some of the existing older park environments, based around old farms in the planned area. These environments, through their size and location create an irrational touch to the layout. In addition, there are different levels in the green areas -smaller units directly linked to housing, larger structures in connection to the existing green corridors (known as “Lernackestråket”) and areas for cultivation – giving the inhabitants an opportunity to produce their own local produce.

The development structure composes itself in four villages in an east-westerly direction. This direction is based on a historical village division, following the contour lines of the landscape and aims to connect, as far as possible, the hinterland through a so-called puzzle principle, where existing passages intervene and connect to adjacent features. The proposed design is therefore not a stand-alone concept; instead it brings together the historical context of the landscape and buildings in the region. Within each village a Centrum node is planned, whose function is intended as a public/semi-public space that acts as an extension of the residential yard, where a more informal meetings between the inhabitants can take place.

2-3 storey houses are the basis for the planned area. The aim is to create a city with high density, proximity and security, without "dead areas." Some high-rise buildings, 8-20 floors, are located along a central axis acting as landmarks. Intermediate level buildings, 4-7 floors high, are absent in the plan. The attractive qualities of the area are therefore to either live near the ground with a private garden or high up, so as to enjoy the spectacular views of the landscape and ocean.
